She was being treated for injuries at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh since an incident at her home in Buckhaven, Fife, on Sunday.
A statement was issued by her family saying: “Hayley is a beautiful baby girl who was loved by everyone who met her and we, as a family, wish to be left alone to grieve at this difficult and trying time.”
A post-mortem examination and major investigation is now under way to determine the exact nature and cause of her death.
Chief Inspector Adrian Annandale, the local commander, said: “This is an extremely tragic and sensitive case and I’d like to reassure Hayley’s family as well as the wider community that we’re conducting a robust investigation and appreciate the assistance provided.”
Hayley had been rushed to hospital by ambulance on Sunday after emergency services received a 999 call.
Police cordoned off the flat at West High Street, Buckhaven, Leven, at around 12.30pm on Sunday.
Police forensic officers were seen examining the area throughout Sunday and Monday.
