I am a little 'on the fence' regarding the authenticity of ghosts. Matter of fact I am described as close minded by many.
My Dad is also cynical and dismissive but a few months ago he told me of a story which he says happened when he moved to London from Northern Ireland in the 1970s before I was born.
My Dad and his family moved into a bedsit which housed several families while they were finalizing a deal on a house in Islington. This bedsit backed onto Highgate Cemetery and could be seen from the communal kitchen. Apparently my Dad was greedy back then, because he says one weekday evening he was watching TV when he felt hungry. He says he went to the kitchen to cook some Vestas chicken from a tin (whatever Vestas chicken is). The kitchen was on the first floor and as my Dad sat and ate it, he felt cold and looked to the left, where he saw a glowing figure with an illuminated, circular face. The apparition had no facial features but wore some cloak; the hood of which was wrapped around the bulbous, circular face. My Dad says that the window where he saw this figure was above the sink - facing the cemetery - and as he saw it it was rising upwards in the window and was facing him. My Dad says he screamed and ran to the hallway where he saw two other tenants: a Scottish guy called Jim and a black guy whose name he cannot remember. They both laughed at him thinking the Irish guy must be drunk or have taken something and didn't believe him. My Dad was the subject of mockery for days afterwards.
The window was at least 10 feet from the ground and my Dad days the figure as it rose and entered faded somewhat where the lower torso should have been. It had no feet and moved in a slow but focused direction...
Dad says he was mocked for a few days or a week (he is unsure how long as this story dates from around 1974). The kitchen was communal and all the families used to play cards in there. Approximately one week later, Jim and his English wife, Celia, were playing cards in the kitchen with 2 or 3 other tenants including either my aunt Margaret or aunt Pearl and ( I think) Celia was facing the window above the kitchen sink when she looked up or something caught her eye and she screamed. When they all turned around they saw the same apparition/figure rising at the window above the kitchen sink.
A few years later according to my Dad, a newspaper published a story that two policemen were parked outside the entrance gate to Highgate Cemetery when they saw the same figure/apparition and they too described it as tall, wearing a dark robe, a glowing circular face with no features and moving in a slow, focused manner.
